The British Minister of Finance opposed the introduction of new measures against COVID-19 in the country

The Minister of Finance of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak opposed the introduction of new restrictive measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, and instead suggested waiting for the clarification of the epidemic picture in the country, writes the British newspaper The Times.

Sunak proposes not to make hasty decisions about the active distribution of the new version of SARS-CoV-2 in the country - "Omicron", which could cost the economy billions of dollars in losses. Thus, he joined the camp of at least 10 ministers who oppose the introduction of new restrictions that call into question the accuracy of modeling the development of the epidemic situation in the country.

For his part, Patrick Valance, a senior scientific adviser to the British government, believes that new restrictions should be introduced as soon as possible to prevent overloading the National Health Service (NHS).

According to Sky News and a number of other British media outlets, government experts are urging the kingdom to impose strict restrictions as soon as possible, warning that in January the daily number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 could triple from the current 900 to 3,000. The extremely rapid spread of the Omicron strain also threatens to lead to temporary labor shortages in a number of key industries and social services, including doctors. To mitigate the potential crisis, experts recommend not to wait with drastic measures until Christmas.
