The US military has ordered the departure of the USS Harry S. Truman nuclear aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean due to the situation around Ukraine. The Associated Press (AP) said on Tuesday, citing an unnamed Pentagon spokesman.
He said plans had previously been made for the Nimetz aircraft carrier as part of a strike group of five US Navy ships to head to the Middle East. However, their route has been changed due to the need to ensure a "permanent presence in Europe"
A spokesman for the military said that Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin had ordered Truman to temporarily leave the strike group in Mediterranean waters, where he is currently. "This is necessary to secure the support of US allies and partners in the region," a spokesman for the US Department of Defense was quoted as saying by the AP.
