The volcanic eruption on the island of Palma (part of the Canary Islands) is over, local authorities said, quoted by RIA Novosti.
"What I want to say today can be said in a few words ... - the eruption ended. It ended on the afternoon of December 13, but I can say it today. When the scientific committee confirms the presence of signs of confidence, there is no lava, no pyroclastics, no significant gases, no significant earthquakes, no earthquakes, no significant deformations. The eruption lasted 85 days and 8 hours, "said Julio Perez, adviser to the Canary Islands government's public administration, justice and security adviser.
According to him, the amount of damage is "huge", while the end of the eruption "does not mean the end of the emergency", the level of danger will remain "red".
According to the authorities' plans, locals whose houses have not been completely destroyed by the lava will be able to start returning to the area in the first half of January, before basic services such as water and electricity supply need to be restored.
The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja ridge is the longest in the history of the island of Palma.
