The previous German government under Angela Merkel in 2021 approved record contracts for the supply of weapons amounting to nine billion euros, which became a record, reports DPA, citing data from the German Ministry of Economy.
The amount exceeds the record of 2019 by almost one billion euros.
Egypt is a leader in purchases. Programs worth 4.34 billion euros have been approved for the country. In addition, almost the entire amount consists of contracts signed nine days before the resignation of Merkel's cabinet.
The agency said ministers had resigned at the time and should not have had to approve such large contracts in the last days of their work. The government also says it is pursuing a restrictive arms supply policy.
