The Ariana-5 rocket launched the James Web orbiting telescope on Saturday from the Kuru launch site in French Guiana, TACC reports.
The Ariana 5 rocket will launch the telescope into orbit. The telescope will then move to its destination at the second Lagrange point in four weeks, the European Space Agency said. This point is four times farther from the Earth than the Moon, 1.5 million km from the country opposite the Sun.
The launch was originally scheduled for December 18, but was postponed several times for various reasons.
James Webb is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). According to the American Internet portal SpaceNews, NASA has invested 8.8 billion dollars in the project, ESA - 815 million, including the cost of the rocket and launch, CSA - 165 million.
