They are renovating the building of the British Parliament for 18 billion dollars and 20 years

A major overhaul of the historic British Parliament building - Westminster Palace, which is in disrepair - could cost £ 14 billion ($ 18.7 billion), more than three times the original forecast, and take about 20 years. This was reported on Monday by The Daily Telegraph, citing government sources.

According to the draft plan currently being discussed, representatives of the two chambers - the Municipalities and the Lords - will be forced to leave the building for the entire period of work, so as not to make the repairs more expensive. Parliamentarians had already voted to relocate three years ago after being told that a £ 4 billion ($ 5.3 billion) renovation would take no more than six years. However, the decision on when to start work has not yet been made.

According to a spokesman for the Organization for the Restoration and Renovation of Buildings, which includes lawmakers, lords, historians and infrastructure experts, "so far the information is based on preliminary estimates to be verified in 2022." The data in this regard will be based on many thousands of hours of building research.

Up to £ 127 million ($ 170 million) is spent annually on building maintenance and ongoing work.

Designed by architects Charles Barry and August Pugin, this impressive neo-Gothic structure on the banks of the Thames was discovered in 1871. Its most famous element is the clock tower and bell, called Big Ben. Since 2012, it has been named after Queen Elizabeth II.
