The Japanese government has adopted a program to combat loneliness

The Government of Japan has adopted a special program aimed at alleviating the problems of human loneliness. It envisions the creation of a 24-hour consultation system on the issue, as well as the creation of various platforms in which single people can gradually engage in communication and get job opportunities, according to the national public television NHK.

The Japanese government intends to conduct a nationwide census designed to determine the exact number of single citizens to help them. A separate secretariat on the issue has been set up in the prime minister's office. In February, a post of Minister for Lonely Citizens was created, who is now also Minister of Low Fertility. The head of the department is Seiko Noda.

Closely related to loneliness is the problem of suicide, which in 2020 was on the agenda for the first time in 11 years. Last year, more than 21,000 people committed suicide in the country, which is 912 more than the previous year. In 2019, the country registered the lowest number of suicides since 1978. Their number decreased for ten years in a row, but the coronavirus pandemic interrupted this positive trend.
