Jens Stoltenberg wants to convene the NATO-Russia Council on 12 January

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has decided to convene a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council on January 12, the Anatolian Agency reported, citing a source from the Alliance.

The interlocutor of the agency noted that NATO is in contact with Russia on this issue. Earlier, the NATO press service announced that on January 12-13, Brussels will host a meeting of the NATO Military Committee at the level of the Chiefs of Staff of the Allies.
On Tuesday, the Secretary General of the Alliance said that NATO proposed to the Russian Federation to hold a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council in early 2022 to discuss the situation in Ukraine. At the same time, he stressed that NATO would never compromise with Russia on Ukraine's right to "choose its own path" and apply to join the Alliance, as well as on the right of NATO countries to defend the rest of the Alliance.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed on Friday that Moscow had received a proposal from Brussels for a Russia-NATO meeting to discuss the situation in Ukraine. According to her, this proposal is currently being considered. At the same time, Zakharova recalled that the NATO-Russia Council was suspended due to "deliberate unfriendly actions with regard to Russia's representation in NATO." The foreign ministry spokesman also reaffirmed Russia's readiness for a direct dialogue with NATO on Russia's draft agreements on Russian security guarantees, excluding further enlargement of the Alliance to the east and the deployment of strike systems near Russia's borders.
