Boris Johnson refused to impose new restrictions before the New Year

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson has announced his decision not to impose new restrictions on the coronavirus until the end of the year, reports The Times.

Against the background of the latest data on the spread of the Omicron strain, the Prime Minister identified as unnecessary the additional restrictions governing indoor meetings. However, Johnson urged people to "continue to be careful."

At the same time, Health Minister Sajid Javid did not rule out the possibility of new measures in 2022.

In the last 24 hours, 98.5 thousand cases of coronavirus infection have been registered in the United Kingdom. In the previous five days, this figure exceeded one hundred thousand and reached a record 122 thousand infected. This happened on Christmas Eve, December 24. In total, over 760,000 new infections have been registered in the last seven days, which is a 30% increase compared to the previous seven-day period. The rapid increase in morbidity is due to the spread of the Omicron strain, which became dominant in the country in mid-December. On Monday, Javid said the new strain now accounts for about 90% of all coronavirus infections in the country.

The first estimates by the UK Health Safety Agency, published on Thursday, show that those infected with Omicron are 50-70% less likely to end up in hospital than those infected with Delta. At the same time, government experts in London fear that even this could increase the burden on the British health system due to the widespread use of Omicron, and key industries, including the health sector, are also at risk of shortages. of labor.
