Schools in England to open despite Omicron

According to reports, schools will open their doors to students in January, despite the growing incidence of coronavirus infections, writes the London Evening Standard.

Boris Johnson reportedly told Education Minister Nadim Zahawi that he was "absolutely determined" to keep schools open after the Christmas holidays.

January is an important part of the school calendar, the newspaper reminds.

Senior students must take the GCSE and A-level mock exams in January, which will be essential to inform teachers about their performance and give them an indication of what grades to give students if national exams are abolished in the summer.

Johnson and Zahawi are believed to be discussing whether schools should return every day in January because education remains a top priority for the government.

The children were sent home last January when schools closed again after spending months in online lessons from March to September amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, there are growing concerns about the potential closure of schools and the chaos of the January exams, which will affect children.
