The United States and South Korea have agreed on a draft document to formally end the Korean War

The Republic of Korea and the United States have agreed on the preliminary text of the document on the official end of the Korean War of 1950-1953, Foreign Minister John Wee Young announced at a press conference on Wednesday, TASS reports.

The armed conflict involving the DPRK, South Korea, the United States and China ended in a truce; the parties did not sign a document ending the war. On December 13, the President of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae-in, announced that Seoul, Pyongyang, Washington and Beijing in general were ready to formally do so.

"South Korea and the United States have previously reaffirmed the importance of signing a declaration on the end of the war, and now the parties have reached an agreement on the content of the draft version of this document," the foreign minister said.

At the same time, Yung Wei Yang believes that the upcoming Beijing Olympics are "unlikely" to improve inter-Korean relations, as happened during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. However, he said, Seoul considers "different options for restarting dialogue with North Korea".

Relations between Pyongyang and Seoul have remained frozen since 2019, when the US-DPRK summit, which was actively promoted by South Korea, ended in failure in Hanoi. Since then, Pyongyang has rejected all proposals from the South to resume contacts and co-operation.
