Japan will declassify technologies used in the military sphere

The Japanese government plans to declassify local patents for technologies that can be used by foreign countries for military purposes, the Tokyo newspaper Nikkei wrote on Sunday, citing its sources.

These are, in particular, nuclear and quantum technologies. Developers of the relevant technologies will also not be able to apply for registration of these patents in other countries. By making the documents classified, the Japanese government will offset the profits that patent holders could earn over a 20-year licensing period. In this way, the Japanese authorities expect to prevent the leakage of sensitive information abroad.

The relevant regulation is expected to enter into force in the financial year 2023 (starting in April 2023).
