According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 558 out of 100,000 people die each year in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a result of air pollution, and Sarajevo often tops the list of the most polluted cities in the world, macedonian Sitel TV reported.
A survey conducted in October 2019 shows that around 3,300 people in BiH die prematurely each year as a result of exposure to air pollution with fine dust particles. About 16% of that burden falls on Sarajevo and Banja Luka.
According to the Sarajevo portal Kliks, BiH and regional citizens inhale more toxic particles than other countries due to the widespread use of solid fuels for heating and cooking. There are still a number of lignite mines in the Balkans.
The text adds that the region is home to seven of the ten most polluting thermal power plants in Europe. That is why many experts, as well as foreign organizations, constantly warn that the fight against air pollution is crucial and requires immediate action.
