Greek divers have discovered the wreckage of an Italian submarine 80 years after it was sunk by Allied forces in the Aegean during World War II, Reuters reports.
The Jantina, which sailed from the Greek island of Leros with 48 sailors on board, sank on July 5, 1941, after being hit by torpedoes fired by the British submarine HMS Torbay.
It was discovered last month by Costas Toktarid, one of Greece's most famous divers, and his team, south of Mykonos, at a depth of 103 meters, using a remote-controlled ROV Super Achilles submarine that conducted a detailed visual inspection of the wreckage.
"Naval history is like a puzzle and it's part of that puzzle," Toktarid, a maritime expert, told the agency. "The collision of two submarines is a rare naval event."
The fact that the submarine is indeed the "Gantina" has been confirmed with the help of records from the Italian Naval History Service, Toktarid said.
It is the fourth submarine discovered and identified by the diver.
