"Strange" disk-shaped "clouds" appeared in the sky over Sochi

Unusually shaped clouds appeared in the sky over the Rosa Khutor resort in Sochi. Locals and tourists shared on social networks footage of a rare natural phenomenon, the newspaper "Moscow Komsomolets" writes.

However, the editorial office explains that there is nothing "strange" in the form of clouds. Such disc-shaped formations are called lenticular clouds and form on the crests of air waves or between two layers of air.

A characteristic feature of such clouds is their still position, even in the presence of strong winds. They can usually be observed on the leeward side of mountain ranges, beyond ridges, as well as above individual peaks, at an altitude of 2 to 15 kilometers. People often confuse lenticular clouds with UFOs, the publication emphasizes.
