Nord Stream 2 is a geostrategic project, not an economic one

German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock said the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was geostrategic and stressed that it was more than a private economic project for her, as Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously described it.

"The last few years, even given the different perceptions [of the project] in Europe, have clearly shown the geostrategic role of Nord Stream 2," Burbock said. The certification process for Nord Stream 2 is of a purely administrative nature and the German Regulator makes decisions without any policy guidance, as this is a commercial project.

Burbock has a similar position as Scholz with regard to Nord Stream 2 certification. Olaf Scholz and I used different words to describe this situation, "she said.

The German Foreign Minister also recalled the agreement between Germany and the United States on Nord Stream 2. Even the previous German government, together with the US administration, made it clear that energy resources could not be used as weapons and that this would have significant consequences. And that also has power, "Burbock concluded.

In order to start pumping gas, the Nord Stream 2 operator must be approved by the German regulator, which is checking the project for compliance with the EU Gas Directive. It is first necessary to coordinate the matter with the European Commission and obtain an opinion from the relevant Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany on the absence of threats to security of gas supply to Germany and other European countries in the event of certification of the operator. On 26 October, the German Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that it had sent its opinion on Nord Stream 2 certification to the regulator and considered that the licensing would not pose a threat to gas supplies to Europe.
