BiH exodus - half a million have emigrated in 9 years

More than 484,000 citizens have left Bosnia and Herzegovina in the past nine years, according to the latest figures from the Union for Sustainable Return and Integration of BiH. The trend of leaving BiH is accelerating, with 24,043 people leaving BiH in 2013, 28,042 next year and 29,805 in 2015, according to Belgrade's Politika.

In the following years, the trend of emigration from the country also continued, with 34,544 people leaving BiH in 2016, 35,634 in 2017 and 20,943 next year.

In the last three years, the tendency for people to leave BiH has been particularly pronounced. According to the BiH Union for Sustainable Return and Integration, 56,987 people emigrated from Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019, 85,000 next year and about 170,000 this year. These figures show that more than 484,000 people have left BiH in the last nine years.

According to the World Bank, in 2020 Bosnia and Herzegovina had a population of 3.281 million.

Economic analyst Admir Cavalic said it was important to keep in mind that populist and short-term policies do not work when it comes to leaving.

"Citizens will not stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina because someone has given several hundred Convertible Marks (the currency of BiH, with the same exchange rate in levs) as part of population policies. Strategic, long-term solutions are needed, which include the participation of different levels of government. Economically, there are two main reasons for leaving - unemployment or, more precisely, long-term unemployment and wages. These reasons have been cited in numerous studies and analyzes on the subject, "Cavalic was quoted as saying by Radio Sarajevo and RTS.

According to the Union for Sustainable Return and Integration of BiH, the most common reasons for leaving are the unstable political situation, a better future for families and children abroad, corruption, a higher quality of life abroad and a greater chance of success for young people. people abroad.
