The Ecumenical Patriarch is infected with the coronavirus

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who is based in Istanbul, is in "good" condition after giving a positive test for coronavirus, his office said on December 24th, quoted by the Turkish English-language Hurriyet Daily News.

Eighty-one-year-old Patriarch Bartholomew has had various health problems in recent months.

Bartholomew underwent heart stent surgery in New York in November and was hospitalized overnight after meeting with US President Joe Biden in Washington a few days earlier.

The patriarch tested positive for coronavirus during a routine examination in Istanbul, his office said.

"His Holiness, who has been fully vaccinated, is currently showing mild symptoms, but his general condition is good," a statement said on Facebook.

Elected in 1991, Bartholomew has a clear position on the climate and cultivates closer relations with both Islam and Roman Catholicism.

In 2013, he attended the enthronement of Pope Francis, the first patriarch to do so after the 1054 schism between Byzantium and Rome.
