A former Pentagon executive has been arrested in the United States on charges of attempting to spy on Russia

An American citizen, who previously had a contract with the Pentagon to conduct test activities, was detained on suspicion of attempting to spy for the Russian Federation. This was stated in a statement by the US Department of Justice on Thursday (local time), reports The New York Times.

John Rove Jr., 63, was reportedly arrested in South Dakota on Wednesday night. According to a statement from the Department of Justice, he was previously a test engineer and performed contracts under contract with the US Department of Defense. It is stated that Rove had access to classified information related to the aerospace technology of the US Air Force.

Rowe is suspected of being a "potential informant" and fired from a Pentagon-linked company, the Justice Department said in a statement. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into the case.

Rove is accused of trying to pass classified US national security information to a foreign government. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison. He is expected to appear in court on Friday.
