Macedonian lawmakers have declared Sunday a day off

62 votes in favor and none against the deputies in the Assembly of Northern Macedonia passed the Law on Amendments to the Law on Labor Relations, which makes Sunday a day of weekly rest, informs the Skopje TV channel "TV 21".

"Sunday, as a non-working day, is a reality. The government and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy fulfilled the promise they made to the workers. "From January 1, Sunday will be a day of weekly rest for 92% of workers," said Labor and Social Policy Minister Jagoda Shahpaska on the adoption of an amendment to the Labor Relations Act, which defines Sunday as a non-working day.

Minister Shahpaska said that this legal solution provides an opportunity to establish a balance between the professional and personal lives of employees, as a prerequisite for their motivation and greater efficiency in the workplace.

"Workers are our biggest asset. Their work must be respected and valued. Therefore, those who will be engaged in activities that should not be interrupted due to the technological process will receive at least 50% higher daily salary per week and a day off that they can enjoy for the next seven days. Non-compliance with this legal decision will be established by the State Labor Inspectorate and employers who violate the law will be banned from working for 15 days, and if the violation is repeated within one year, the ban will be 30 days. "During a work ban, the employer will be obliged to pay workers compensation equal to the salary," Shahpaska said.

She added that the employees in the shopping centers, ie. the malls, which will be open on Sundays, will receive two daily wages. An additional 2% of the turnover in the malls in the previous year for work on Sundays and holidays will be used to build new kindergartens.

"Workers are the backbone of our economy and the driving force of the state." "That is why they remain our priority in building future policies," said Minister Shahpaska.
