Romania's Supreme Court of Cassation has acquitted former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, who has been convicted of two corruption cases, Agerpress reports.
Nastase was sentenced in 2012 to two years in prison for misappropriation of funds by private companies in the 2004 election campaign and to four years in prison for bribery and extortion in 2014. In total, he was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison. freedom and remained in prison for more than two years. Following his parole in August 2014, Nastase was barred from running for political office.
The decision of the highest court in Romania can be appealed within 10 days.
Pursuant to Article 169 of the Romanian Penal Code, in the case of rehabilitation of a convicted person, deprivation of rights, prohibitions and incapacity resulting from the sentence imposed on him shall be revoked. Thus, if this court decision remains in force, Nastase will be able to vote and be elected, in other words, he will be able to return to politics.
The 71-year-old Social Democrat was foreign minister, chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, prime minister, and in 2004 ran for president of Romania. He is currently the head of the Nicolae Titulescu European Foundation.
