Over 90 percent of the urban population of the Old Continent is exposed to high levels of fine dust particles, nitrogen dioxide and ozone above those recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The European Commission has launched a review of EU air quality standards to bring them in line with WHO recommendations.
