The United States may announce a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics this week

The administration of US President Joe Biden is expected to announce a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics in the near future, CNN reported, citing sources.

According to media reports, US officials will not be present at the Olympics. Such a decision would send a clear message to China, without depriving American athletes of the opportunity to compete. The boycott is expected to be announced this week. It is recalled that earlier Biden declined to comment on a possible boycott of the Games by the United States.

In May this year, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on the international community to diplomatically boycott the Olympic Games in China. According to her, the leaders of the world's leading countries should refrain from participating in competitions. The reason is the mass repression attributed to the PRC in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Beijing strongly denies such allegations. At the same time, the US National Olympic Committee opposed the boycott.

The XXIV Olympic Winter Games will be held in Beijing from February 4 to 20, 2022.
