Turkish police will help Hungary guard its borders

Turkish police will start helping to protect Hungary's borders with Serbia and Romania, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu was quoted as saying by the Daily Sabah.

Turkey will deploy 50 police officers in Hungary, according to a protocol signed between the two countries.

Turkish police will support efforts to prevent illegal migration, drug smuggling and cross-border crime.

Soylu, who was visiting the Hungarian capital Budapest, met with Hungarian counterpart Sandor Pinter.

Speaking at a joint news conference after the meetings, Soylu said he and his counterpart had signed a very important memorandum of understanding as part of an agreement reached at the High-Level Strategic Co-operation Council in the Turkish capital on November 11th, attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Pointing out that pandemics, migration and energy problems are creating difficulties on a global scale, Soylu said: "Apart from these global problems, there are regional problems that concern us all. Unfortunately, we face cross-border crimes such as terrorism, (illegal drug trafficking) and global issues such as cybercrime. "

"One of the most important steps we need to take against them is regional and international cooperation," he added.

Soylu said Turkish and Hungarian police will be involved in a joint project to fight illegal immigration, drug trafficking and cross-border crime.
