A court in Ukraine has allowed the arrest of Petro Poroshenko

The Pechora district court of Kiev has allowed the arrest of former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. This was announced by the Ukrainian agency "Ukrainian News", citing sources.

"The Pechora District Court has given its consent to the arrest of Petro Poroshenko. The decision was made on Friday morning as part of the investigation into the case of suspected treason, which is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation," the agency said in its Telegram channel.

According to the agency, the court allowed the detention of the former president in order to bring him to consider the application for a preventive measure in the form of detention.

Earlier on Friday, the Glavkom newspaper, citing its own sources, said that the Ukrainian prosecutor's office would ask the court to arrest Poroshenko. Acting Chief Prosecutor Alexei Simonenko has signed a request for the arrest of former President and leader of European Solidarity Petro Poroshenko with the possibility of bail of 1 billion hryvnias (about $ 37 million).

At the same time, Poroshenko's lawyer Ilya Novikov did not confirm the information circulated in the media that there was a court decision to arrest the former president. "It is not known whether there was a court decision, as well as this incredible guarantee," he said at a briefing on Ukraine-24 television. Another of Poroshenko's lawyers, Igor Golovanov, said defenders of the former Ukrainian leader had turned to the State Investigation Bureau to obstruct their work as lawyers.

Poroshenko is already abroad and will return to the country after holding international meetings and a short vacation, said Alexander Turchinov, former secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and head of the election headquarters of Poroshenko's European Solidarity party. He is convinced that the case against Poroshenko "will become a farce, like all previous ones." An aide to the former president considers all allegations against Poroshenko unfounded.
