An earthquake shook southern Greece

A strong earthquake shook parts of southern Greece on Saturday, according to a page on the website of the European Mediterranean Seismological Institute.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 and a depth of almost 60 km was registered at 07:16 local time (coincides with the Bulgarian time) in the sea between the Peloponnese and Crete 202 km west of Heraklion.

Greek media reported that the quake was felt from Athens to Crete.

It was "about five seconds long, quite loud even in the basement of the building," wrote a witness in the city of Chania in Crete on the page of stories of those who felt the quake at the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

The Greek Fire Service said there was no evidence of damage.

"Due to its considerable depth, the quake was felt in a wider area," Eftimios Lekas, head of the Greek anti-seismic planning organization, told Greek state television ERT.
