Japan has no plans to send members of government or other government officials to the Beijing Olympics in support of a US-announced diplomatic boycott of the Games. This was reported by the local newspaper Sankei, citing sources.
At the same time, according to the preliminary plan, the Japanese delegation in Beijing will include the chairman of the sports department Koji Mirofushi and the head of the Japanese Olympic Committee Yasuhiro Yamashita. They are not civil servants, which would allow Japan to support a diplomatic boycott by the United States. Tokyo will take a final decision on this issue at a later stage, taking into account the actions of the G7 partners and the reaction of the Chinese side.
Earlier, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that Japan would proceed from its own national interests regarding a possible diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Games.
