The members of the Bundestag elected the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz as the new Chancellor of Germany, the national daily Die Welt reports live from the hall.
Scholz received 395 votes in favor of his candidacy, 303 voted against. According to the regulations, the President of the Bundestag Berbel Bass asked the Social Democrat if he would accept the results of the vote. The politician answered in the affirmative.
As an exception, Bass allowed lawmakers to use cell phones to take pictures.
Scholz is now heading to the Bellevue Presidential Palace - according to the Constitution, it is the head of state who appoints the new chancellor. After meeting with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Scholz will return to parliament to take the oath.
