At least 60 people were killed when a fuel tanker exploded in the northern Haitian city of Cap Atien, Le Nouvelliste reported on Tuesday, citing a local government official, TASS reported.
About 50 people were reported killed earlier. More than 20 buildings near the site of the blast were damaged.
Haitian authorities have declared three days of national mourning.
"On behalf of my government and the entire population of Haiti, including the diaspora, I express my sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims, as well as to all those who have been directly or indirectly affected by this tragedy. Three days of national mourning will be declared throughout the country, "Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henri wrote on Twitter.
The fire broke out around midnight local time. According to preliminary information, when the tanker overturned on the road, passers-by took the opportunity to fill the fuel tanks of their vehicles. An explosion is believed to have followed, resulting in casualties.
