Denmark will rent 300 prison cells in Kosovo for convicts from third countries

Denmark plans to rent 300 prison cells in Kosovo for third-country prisoners, electronic media Prishtina Insight reported.

Scandinavian Justice Minister Nick Heckerup announced the plan on Wednesday after negotiating an agreement with the Danish People's Party and the Conservatives. In a statement, the minister clarified that an agreement had been reached with Pristina to rent prisons in Kosovo to deport convicts from third countries.

"Deported criminals can now serve their sentences abroad and it is no secret that there are problems with space in Danish prisons," said Danish People's Party legal policy spokesman Peter Skaarup.

The Ministry of Justice in Kosovo announced during the day that it has committed to release the appropriate number of cells for 300 prisoners from Denmark. The Ministry of Justice is committed to the release of a correctional facility with a capacity of 300 convicts to be brought from the Kingdom of Denmark. The convicts who will be transferred to this institution will not be at high risk, "the statement said.

As compensation, Kosovo will receive 210m euros, which will be "earmarked for capital investment, especially for renewable energy", the Justice Ministry in Pristina said.
