Semeru volcano, located in the Indonesian province of East Java (on the island of Java), erupted on Saturday and began emitting hot clouds of smoke and ash. This was announced by the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency on its Twitter page, CNN Indonesia reports.
An increase in the activity of the volcano was registered around 15:20 local time.
According to CNN Indonesia, the head of Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency in East Java has called on citizens living at the foot of the volcano to evacuate.
The National Agency's Twitter page reported that local office staff had gone to the site of a possible volcanic eruption to monitor the situation, gather data and carry out the evacuation.
