Israel records first death of Omicron

The first death of an infected person with the new coronavirus strain, Omicron, has been reported in Israel, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The deceased is a 60-year-old man admitted to a hospital in the town of Beersheba. Doctors explained that he suffered from several other major medical conditions that were the main cause of his death, not the virus. The initial PCR test aroused suspicion of the possibility. After further analysis, it was determined that the man was infected with Omicron. He died a little later.

His death was announced by the Ministry of Health. The agency confirmed that 170 new cases of Omicron have been detected in the country, bringing the total number of infected with the new strain to 341. 1,300 new cases of COVID-19 have been registered, diagnosed in the last 24 hours - the highest number in the country since October.

As a result of the rising infection rate, the government decided on Tuesday that public services would now have to send 50% of their staff to work remotely.

The cabinet is meeting late tonight to discuss further new restrictions.
