MEP defeats George Papandreou in Greece's third party election

The third largest group in the Greek parliament on Sunday elected a member of the European Parliament as its new leader, Kathimerini writes. Nikos Andrulakis defeated former Prime Minister George Papandreou to lead the Movement for Change, a socialist coalition.

Partial results just before 9 pm showed that 42-year-old Andrulakis received 68.4% of the vote against 31.6% for 69-year-old Papandreou. Papandreou called his opponent to greet him.

Andrulakis, a civil engineer, began his political career as the leader of the youth wing of the Panelin Socialist Movement, or PASOK, one of the parties in the Movement for Change.

With 22 members in the 300-member Greek parliament, the Movement for Change is the third largest political group in Greece, behind the ruling conservative New Democracy and the left-wing SYRIZA. She won 8.1% of the vote in the last national elections in Greece in July 2019.
