NATO and Kiev can decide on Ukraine's membership in the Alliance

The United States believes that only NATO members and Kiev should decide on Ukraine's eventual membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. This was announced on Monday at a regular press briefing by White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki, quoted by TASS.

After reading a statement from the White House on telephone conversations between advisers to Russian and US presidents Yuri Ushakov and Jake Sullivan on Moscow's security guarantees, she added: "This is in line with our ongoing work and engagement with Russia, Ukraine and Ukraine. Europe in the context of what happened last week. " "As far as NATO membership or joining NATO is concerned, [...] then, with regard to their [Russian] proposal, from the point of view of [US President Joe Biden] and the administration, it is the right of sovereign states to choose its partnerships and alliances is one of the fundamental principles of European security, "she said, adding that this approach remains US policy.

"We support the countries' aspirations to join NATO and meet the specific requirements [for Alliance membership]. "NATO's relations with Ukraine are an issue that only needs to be resolved by Ukraine and its 30 NATO allies," Psaki added.

As Russian President's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier on Monday, Ushakov and Sullivan "continued the discussion in the context of the well-known Russian proposals set out in two draft documents and previously handed over to the United States." He noted that the talks were "business-like and pragmatic" and the presidential aides "agreed to continue contacts".

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry released two Russian draft documents providing legal security guarantees from the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance. Earlier, it was reported that Ushakov had told Sullivan that Moscow was ready to begin talks immediately on drafts of the documents. Russia will be represented at the consultations by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov.
