The future leader of the CDU considers legitimate Ukraine's request for the supply of defense weapons

The future chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, considers Ukraine's request for the supply of defense weapons to be legitimate. He said this in an interview published in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

"Ukraine's request for defensive weapons in the light of the significant build-up of Russian troops on its eastern border is undoubtedly legitimate," Merz said. He called for a "clear, firm response" to Moscow's actions.

The politician said "Russia must abide by the decisions adopted at the 1999 OSCE summit in Istanbul." "Then all participants, including Ukraine, were promised free choice of alliances. And Russia approved of that," he argued. "However, no one has ever promised Russia that Eastern European countries will not be admitted to NATO," said Merz, who is expected to be confirmed chairman of the CDU in January.
