Chinese authorities consider the decision of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) to suspend all tournaments in China due to a sex scandal with tennis player Peng Shuai to politicize sports. This was stated on Thursday by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country Van Wenbin, quoted by TASS.
"China has always strongly opposed the politicization of sporting events," he told a briefing, commenting on the WTA decision.
Earlier, the association announced the suspension of competitions in China due to the situation with Peng Shuai.
On November 2, the athlete posted a message on the social network Weibo, in which she accused a high-ranking Chinese official of forcing an intimate relationship. This information was later deleted, but managed to spread on the Internet. The situation attracted the attention of the international community, concerns about the safety of Peng Shuai were expressed by the foreign ministries of Britain, France and the United States, the WTA and a number of famous athletes.
