Harris called for new rules in space after seeing Russia blow up its old satellite

US Vice President Kamala Harris says Russia's "irresponsible act" that blew up one of its old satellites last month has shown the need for more sustained global efforts to adopt rules of conduct in orbit to protect national security and protection of growing trade, writes the American edition of Politico.

"By blowing up debris into space, this irresponsible act has endangered the satellites of other nations, as well as astronauts on the International Space Station," Harris said at the inaugural meeting of the National Space Council under her leadership.

"We must demand responsibility from all space nations," she added. "We need to expand the rules and regulations on safety and security, on transparency and cooperation, to include military, commercial and civilian space activities."

Calls to increase the security of space systems came after Russia's actions, which the publication said had sent thousands of debris into space, posing new dangers in Earth's increasingly busy low orbit.

Harris' comments, her first public remarks on the issue since the Nov. 15 test, were also highlighted in the new "space priorities framework" she released Wednesday before the council meeting.
