Three areas in Serbia have declared a state of emergency due to snowfall

A state of emergency due to heavy snowfall has been declared in the Serbian municipalities of Ivanica, Lucani and Nova Varos, the Serbian state news agency Tanjug reported.

According to the information in the municipality of Ivanitsa, 3400 households remain without electricity. The exact number of residents left without electricity has not been specified. In the municipality of Luciani, about five thousand people were left without electricity. Nova Varos authorities have declared a state of emergency due to the inability to cope with the consequences of the snowfall on their own.

According to Serbian newspaper Blic, 17 people have been cut off from the outside world due to bad weather in the Malen peak area in the western part of the country. Several families with children were on a picnic in the mountains, where they were overtaken by heavy snowfall. After the cars ran out of gas, the people headed for the abandoned hunting lodge. Families spend more than 24 hours in the mountains without food.

Weather conditions still do not allow rescuers to come to their aid. Employees of the Serbian Mountain Rescue Service from the town of Valjevo headed to the area on skis to deliver food and drinking water to families.

A heavy snowstorm started in Serbia on Saturday night. The height of the snow cover reaches an average of 50 cm, which is an absolute record for the country. Bad weather has led to many road accidents. Classes in schools in Obrenovac municipality have been canceled for 48 hours due to power outages.
