Vladimir Putin talks on the phone with Angela Merkel

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Thursday with Angela Merkel, who ended her work as German Chancellor on Wednesday, TACC reports.

"Vladimir Putin warmly thanked Angela Merkel for many years of fruitful cooperation, emphasizing her significant contribution to the development of Russian-German relations," the Kremlin's press service said.

The Kremlin added that Merkel, for her part, thanked Putin for his joint work and wished him success in establishing a dialogue with the new head of the German government, Olaf Scholz. Putin also noted that he would always be glad to see Merkel in Russia.

On Wednesday, the president of the Russian Federation sent a telegram to Merkel, in which she addressed her as "you" and assured her of the continuation of friendly communication. The head of state recalled that he and Merkel were "in constant contact and trying to find a way out of even the most difficult situations."

The last time Putin and Merkel met in person was on August 20, during her "farewell visit" to Moscow. This was their first face-to-face meeting since the beginning of the pandemic. At the same time, the two leaders communicated regularly by telephone. According to the Kremlin's website, the last talks between Putin and Merkel in this format took place in November, with the main topic being the migration crisis on Belarus' borders with EU countries.
