The EC may withdraw from long-term natural gas supply contracts

The European Union plans to set strict deadlines for long-term natural gas import contracts as part of the "transition to green energy". This was reported by Bloomberg, citing documents available to the editorial office.

According to the agency, the European Commission wants to prevent the extension of such contracts after 2049 in connection with a radical revision of its energy market. The representatives of the European Commission will also propose a set of measures to ensure security of supply against the background of upcoming increases in winter and acute energy shortages.

The package includes, in particular, a strategic approach to gas storage, including measures to create a high level of reserve replenishment at the beginning of the heating season.

Bloomberg notes that the plan, which could be published on December 15, runs counter to Russia's calls to cover a third of Europe's gas needs. EU heads of government will discuss planned measures at a summit in Brussels on December 16th, the agency added.
