For the first time in history, a woman of African-American descent will head the New York police

African-American Kishant Xwell will head the New York City Police Department, becoming the first woman to head law enforcement in the iconic American city, the New York Post reported.

Xwell's candidacy was approved by the elected mayor of New York, Eric Adams, who himself worked in the capital's police for 22 years. "Kishant Xwell has proven to be a crime fighter with experience and emotional intelligence to give New Yorkers the security they need and the justice they deserve," Adams said in a statement.

For her part, Xuel, 49, admitted that she "takes this appointment and its historical significance very seriously."

Last year, Xwell was head of the Nassau County Detective Police Department in New York City, where he had just over 350 people under his command. She, who has worked in law enforcement for 25 years, will now have to head the country's largest police force with a staff of 52,000. The official announcement of the appointment will take place on Wednesday morning (local time).
