Franziska Giffey has been elected the new mayor of Berlin

The federal capital of Germany has a new mayor - Franziska Giffey of the Social Democrats, who received the support of 84 of the 139 members of the Senate, reports BILD.

"Against" her candidacy was announced by 52, and two deputies abstained from voting. However, the support of the others proved to be enough for Giffey to lead the red-green-red Senate. The coalition has a majority of 92 of the 147 seats in parliament. However, several deputies were not present at Tuesday's secret ballot.

Thus, for the first time, state policy in Berlin will be run by a woman. The former Federal Minister for Family Affairs succeeds Michael Mueller (GSPD), who moved to the Bundestag.

After his election, Giffey was sworn in before the regional parliament, after which the new members of the Senate had to be appointed and sworn in. The Social Democrats will now have four senators in the province's new government, three in the Greens and three in the Left.

In the morning, representatives of the three partners signed a coalition agreement to form the new government.
