Greece may lose its sovereignty over the eastern Aegean islands

Turkey has posed a new challenge to Athens, this time with Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu going so far as to question Greece's sovereignty over the eastern Aegean islands, which are "illegally militarized" by Turkey, according to the Greek City Times.

Speaking to the Turkish parliament and after being asked by an opposition lawmaker about the demilitarization regime on the Aegean islands, Cavusoglu said the islands should be demilitarized, but that regime has been violated since 1960.

He noted that Greece cannot have the right to sovereignty over the islands it militarizes, and a corresponding letter has been sent to the UN.

"Opposition MP Engin Altai has accused our government of inaction on the demilitarized regime of the Aegean islands. This is a national issue, "Cavusoglu said. These islands were ceded to Greece under the conditions of Lausanne and Paris, subject to demilitarization. Greece has been militarizing these islands since 1960. This is nothing new. But what did we do?

"We sent a letter to the UN and stressed that in the event that Greece continues to violate the demilitarized regime on the islands, it will not be able to claim to have the right to sovereignty over them.

And that's what we wrote down at the UN. "
