Germany is prosecuting two Russian diplomats for killing a Chechen in Berlin

Germany considers the murder of Georgian citizen of Chechen origin Zelimkhan Hangoshvili in Berlin in 2019 a violation of its sovereignty and is prosecuting two employees of the Russian embassy, Foreign Minister Analena Berbok told reporters on Wednesday, TASS quoted TASS as saying.

"This murder, as the court found today in state order, is a serious violation of German law and the sovereignty of the Federal Republic. We just called the Russian ambassador for a talk. The ambassador was informed that two representatives of the diplomatic staff of the Russian embassy had been declared undesirable persons, "she said.

Burbock recalled that the day before she had a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as a result of which she spoke in favor of an "open dialogue" with Moscow. "This is in the mutual interest, it must be done on the basis of international law and mutual respect," she said. "It is clear that actions such as the Tiergarten murder would seriously complicate the exchange."

Earlier, a court in Berlin sentenced a Russian citizen to life in prison for killing a Georgian citizen 2.5 years ago. The court agreed with the prosecution's arguments that the murder was allegedly carried out on the instructions of the state structures of the Russian Federation.

Russia's ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev, said earlier that he considered the sentence "a biased, politically motivated decision that seriously worsens the already difficult Russian-German relations." "The absurd thesis of the Russian Federation's involvement in the tort was methodically imposed on the public throughout the process, intertwined with the general anti-Russian background, but in the end was never confirmed by convincing evidence," the diplomat said.
