Sadiq Khan canceled the New Year's celebrations in Trafalgar Square because of Omicron

Authorities in London have canceled New Year's celebrations in Trafalgar Square due to the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the country. This was announced on Monday night by the mayor of the British capital Sadiq Khan, quoted by The Telegraph.

"This will be very frustrating for many Londoners, but we need to take the right steps to reduce the spread of the virus," he said in a statement.

Earlier, city officials planned to limit the number of participants in the festivities in central London to 6.5 thousand people. Due to the organizational difficulties associated with the pandemic, instead of the traditional New Year's fireworks on the banks of the Thames on the last day of 2021, it was decided to hold the celebrations in Trafalgar Square, where it will be possible to reach only by ticket. It is planned that on the eve of the New Year, famous musicians will come out on the square and a festive fair will take place. The main photos and videos from last year had to be shown on big screens.
