There are more journalists in prison today than in any other year since 1996, indicating that repression against the free press in the world is on the rise, according to The Times.
Statistics from the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders show that there are 488 media professionals in prison, an increase of 20 per cent in the last year.
The figure is the highest since the beginning of the recordings, "because the authoritarian regimes in Hong Kong, Belarus and Myanmar suppress the negative coverage," the newspaper writes.
There are now 127 journalists in prison in China and 53 in Minmar, including Soe Naing, a photojournalist who reportedly died in custody.
