Five people died in a fire at a nursing home in Spain

A fire broke out in a nursing home on the outskirts of the Spanish city of Valencia early Wednesday, killing five residents of the home, emergency services said, according to Reuters.

The fire started around midnight and took about two hours to control, the fire service said on Twitter.

About 70 residents were evacuated from their home in Moncada, a northern suburb of Valencia, Spain's third-largest city. The house has rooms for 100 people.

Eleven people have been taken to hospital injured by smoke inhalation, emergency services said.

The causes of the fire are being clarified by the fire brigade and the police.

"The first clues, according to what I was told, point to two possibilities: electrical damage, probably related to an oxygen cylinder, or negligence by a resident who smoked," city councilor and firefighter Martin Perez Aranda told 24H TV.

According to him, most of the residents of the burned part of the home have been moved to a vacant place in the same social institution and will be evacuated to other homes in the region during the day.

At least six people died early Wednesday morning in a fire at a nursing home in Moncada (Autonomous Community of Valencia). This was reported by the Spanish newspaper El Periodico.

According to the publication, about 50 people were injured by burns or flue gas poisoning, 15 of them were hospitalized.
