Rio Tinto postpones lithium production due to delays in approval

Rio Tinto announced today that due to delays in obtaining approval for the lithium deposit, it has reviewed the dynamics of the Yadar project, the Belgrade-based Politika newspaper reported.

Based on current assessments and subject to all relevant approvals and permits, the first commercial production is expected to start in 2027 at the earliest, the statement said, recalling that the previous planned deadline was 2026.
Rio Tinto adds that the company remains committed to the development of the Yadar project and acknowledges that as the project progresses, it will listen to and respect the views of all stakeholders, Tanjug reported.

Rio Tinto notes that it will use the extra time to continue to engage with the community and clarify all issues related to the potential environmental impact of the project.

According to the company, obtaining approval for the operational field is a necessary condition for Rio Tinto to formally submit environmental impact assessment studies to the Serbian government, which will include a public consultation.

Environmental impact assessment studies are crucial in assessing and defining measures to mitigate potential environmental impacts. The preparation of the feasibility study continues and the completion is revised based on the re-evaluated dynamics of the project implementation.

"Rio Tinto is committed to meeting the highest environmental standards and developing the Nuclear Project in a sustainable way, in accordance with best international practices and all applicable laws and regulations of the Republic of Serbia and the European Union," the statement said.
