The American presence in Alexandroupolis embarrasses Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed Moscow's embarrassment at the increased US presence in the northern Greek port of Alexandroupolis (Alexandroupoli), the online edition of the Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported.

Lavrov said this at his annual press conference in Moscow.

Asked about the prospect of transferring NATO military equipment through the Greek port, the Russian foreign minister said he understood that Greece was a member of NATO and the European Union, "at the same time we see that Greece does not want to go the way of additional sanctions against Russia. Greece is not happy with the continuing development between the West and the Russian Federation.

"We believe that our Greek friends, with their wisdom, will make a decision that reflects their beliefs," he added, referring to a recent telephone conversation with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, which he described as "very good". .

Lavrov said he had raised the issue of new steps in Greek-US relations to strengthen the status of the port of Alexandroupolis for the US Navy, and that Moscow had understood how the United States would use the port.

His remarks came days after Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said weapons systems had been transferred to Ukraine through the port of Alexandroupolis.

Lavrov also referred to the historical dimension of Greek-Russian relations and noted "the historical roots with the Greek people, with Greece as a state."

"We remember (Ioannis) Kapodistrias, who became the first governor of modern Greece after his term in Russia, in fact on the front of foreign diplomacy," Lavrov said, adding that current bilateral relations "are really rich in all directions, including in the field." security. "
