272 cryptocurrency digging machines seized in northern Kosovo

Kosovo police seized 272 cryptocurrency digging devices this morning in a village near Leposavic, in a Serb-populated area in the north, the Macedonian Information Agency (MIA) in Pristina was quoted as saying by Skopje's Sitel television.

Kosovo Interior Minister Jalal Sveclja said on his Facebook page that a man had been arrested in the incident, which took place without incident.

The minister announced that similar actions will continue in the future, until the full implementation of the decision of the Kosovo Assembly and the government to ban the extraction of cryptocurrency.

"This morning, at the request of the Customs, the Kosovo Police organized an operation to detect and seize devices for digging cryptocurrencies. During this operation near the village of Trebica in the municipality of Leposavic, 272 such devices were seized and one person was arrested. The whole action was carried out without incident. Such actions will continue until the full implementation of the decision of the parliament and the government, "Svechlya writes.

Two days ago, police seized 70 cryptocurrency digging machines in South Mitrovica and Poduevo.

The Kosovo government announced on Tuesday (January 4th) that the relevant institutions will commit to stopping the production of cryptocurrencies, given that devices designed to do so cause high electricity consumption while the country is in a severe energy crisis.

Pristina media report that the illegal production of cryptocurrencies is particularly prevalent in northern Kosovo, where much of the local Serb population has not paid its electricity bills for years. The decision of the government of Albin Kurti from May last year to settle the debt of the citizens from this part of the country to the electricity operator with about 11 million euros from the budget also provoked reactions in the society.
